FAGOT PUKLLAY
bassoon and piano (2019)
“Daniel Cueto’s Fagot Pukllay enriches the bassoon repertoire with its magical harmonies, clever syncopations, and artful incorporation of elements of traditional South American folk music. It’s not like anything else for bassoon, so it will fit into almost any program, and it’s sure to delight the audience.”
About the work
“Fagot” is Spanish for "bassoon". ”Pukllay” is a Quechua word, meaning "game" or "to play”.
This bilingual title expresses the mixed nature of the piece´s influences, combining Western structures with the pentatonic scales and syncopated cadences of traditional music from the Peruvian Andes. It also conveys what I felt was an especially "playful" approach in creating and developing the ideas for the work.
